Dr Manjeet Singh Usma

Dr. Manjeet is a Research Fellow at Deakin University’s School of Information Technology, with over 30 years of industry experience spanning business management, innovative technology platforms, and the design of mobile-based immersive media. He specialises in emerging technologies including Artificial Intelligence (AI), Virtual Reality (VR), and Augmented Reality (AR), all integrated with advanced data analytics.

His research and development interests focus on the creation of innovative mobile applications that incorporate immersive and persuasive technologies, particularly in support of online help-seeking within educational, social, and community contexts. He brings deep expertise in applied research that connects technological innovation with real-world impact.

With a strong foundation in industry collaboration, Dr. Manjeet has led ICT start-ups, secured competitive grants and venture funding, and delivered outcomes on government IT projects. His experience includes strategic partnership development, cross-sector project leadership, and the application of research to commercial and community challenges.

His academic focus lies at the intersection of teaching and applied research, with emphasis on AI-driven virtual voicebots, user experience (UX) design, smart interfaces, Augmented Reality (AR), and Human-Computer Interaction (HCI).

In addition to his academic role, Dr. Manjeet works as an IT Consultant, assisting clients in the transformation, design, and development of IT systems and applications using the latest in web and mobile technologies.

Dr. Manjeet holds a PhD and MSc. (Research) in Information Technology from Deakin University (Australia), and a Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical) from the Nanyang Technological University (Singapore), with specialisations in Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) and Human Factors (HF) Engineering. He is fluent in six Asian languages and brings a cross-cultural, inclusive perspective to digital innovation in education and technology delivery.

Dr Manjeet mentoring the Glendal Primary School’s robotics team ‘Cosmo Bots’ in AR immersive applications and solutions for community engagement. The team won the National First Lego League Robotics Championship South in Melbourne in November 2019 and invited to represent Australia at the FIRST LEGO League ‘City Shaper’ World Festival held in Houston, Texas in April 2020.
